Make Sure You're Using the Latest Version of Winamp
With every new version release of Winamp, the Nullsoft team not only bundles in new features and functionality, they also make sure to include bug fixes and cleaner code. Many times, simply upgrading your software might be enough to kick whatever issues you may be experiencing. Problems that you might find lurking around Winamp 5.0 may already be long gone in 5.08.

Winamp 2.x users should also note that Winamp 5 is a continuation of version 2's code, unlike Winamp 3, which was rewritten from scratch. Winamp 5 is a direct upgrade from Winamp 2, adding in new fixes, security enhancements, and plug-ins (which can be easily disabled if needed). Consequently, Winamp 2.x users are highly advised to download the latest version of Winamp.

Clean Install Winamp and Check Your Plug-Ins
When installing Winamp, you may want to install into an empty directory (new folder), or uninstall your previous version first. Clean installing helps avoid configuration conflicts that may occur when overwriting existing files. Please consult these procedures when looking to do a full uninstall and/or reinstall.

Many instances of Winamp crashing or slowing down could be attributed to unsupported, third party plug-ins. Problems you are experiencing could be the fault of a plug-in, and not Winamp's. If you have reason to believe that a plug-in is in fact causing conflict with Winamp or any other plug-ins you may have installed, you can do one of the following:

Uninstall the plug-in by first hitting Ctrl - P to go into your Winamp Preferences settings. Under Plug-ins, choose the category of your plug-in. Select the offending plug-in. Click the "Uninstall plug-in" button.
Uninstall the plug-in by locating and deleting the appropriate files in your Winamp Plug-ins folder. (e.g. C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins)
Download the latest version of the plug-in, and hope it fixes the issue.
Contact the author about the issue, and hope he/she fixes the problem in their next release.

Install Only What You Need.
If you wish to install Winamp with just "basic functionality", you have the option of downloading a powered-down "Lite" version. Though Winamp Lite is able to play your MP3 files and is compatible with Winamp 2 plug-ins and Classic skins, it lacks the following Winamp 5 features: Modern skin support, video playback, the redesigned Media Library, integrated visualizers, ripping/burning support, and the integrated radio/TV tuner. Winamp's product overview provides some information on the above elements.

If you'd rather not lose out on all of those items, you can download the full version, and uncheck the specific features in the installer that you do not plan to use. For example, you can uncheck "support for cd burning/ripping" if you do not plan on using Winamp for CD burning/ripping, but leave the other options marked to install those. Though Winamp runs fine on most systems with all of the "extras" installed, if you do not plan on using them, Winamp will be wasting it's time (and yours) loading them up.

Use Classic Skins or Keep Your Modern Skins Trim.

Running Winamp in Classic skin mode drastically decreases the startup time of Winamp, while increasing overall speed. While Modern/Freeform skins typically come equipped with extra functions and are oftentimes more visually impressive, you pay for that all with longer load times and more CPU. Classic skins can usually be differentiated from their Modern counterparts by their rectangular shape. Winamp's default Classic can be selected by going to Options > Skins > Winamp Classic. There is a Classic skin that closely resembles the look of the default Modern skin, for those of you wish to use that instead You can choose not to have support for Modern skins at all by unchecking the feature when installing.

If you decide to use Modern/Freeform skins, there are several tweaks you can apply to your preferences, improving your performance while using these skins. All of these preferences can be quickly accessed by hitting Ctrl - P.

Skins > Modern Skins > General tab. On the Timer's Resolution, experiment with what works best for you by moving the slider to the right. The farther right you move the slider, the less CPU this function will use.
Skins > Modern Skins > Alpha Blending tab. Uncheck: enable desktop alpha blending (if using Win2k or XP).
Skins > Modern Skins > Font Rendering. Checkmark: allow use of bitmap fonts that have not been mapped.
Skins > Modern Skins > Current Skin tab. Uncheck: enable beat detection
Skins > Modern Skins > Current Skin tab. Checkmark: disable song ticker

Fine Tune Your General Preferences.
Listed below are several options in Winamp's preferences that you can choose to either enable or disable. While each of these options should add some speed to either your load times or general usage, you should make sure that Winamp retains the functionality you need before turning off any features. All of these preferences can be quickly accessed by hitting Ctrl - P.

General Preferences. Uncheck: show splash screen.

General Preferences. Uncheck: allow Winamp to report anonymous usage statistics
General Preferences > File Types. Uncheck: restore file associations at start-up (Leave this checkmarked if you find that your other media players are resetting your file associations.)

General Preferences > Media Library > Recent Items tab. Uncheck: track playback count and last playback time of all files (Leave this checkmarked if you wish to use the Recently Played view and keep track of your play counts.)
General Preferences > Media Library > Recent Items tab. Uncheck: track playback count and last playback time of streams (Leave this checkmarked if you wish to use the Recent Items view.)
General Preferences > CD Ripping > Ripping tab. Uncheck: read audio data from CDs using bundled Sonic extraction engine (Only recommended if you have an ASPI Layer Manager installed.)

Leave Winamp Minimized.
Many users report that Winamp requires less CPU when in it's minimized state. You can usually find the minimize button on the main window's top right corner, third from the right. If you have Global Hotkeys enabled, a keyboard with multimedia buttons, or a plug-in that provides you with alternate playback controls, you should still be able to carry out basic functions with Winamp while the player is minimized.

Consult the Winamp Forums.
If worse comes to worse, and none of the above tips help you, your problems might require a lot more than this guide can help you with. If that's the case, I suggest you either visit #winamptech (irc.zirc.org), or the Winamp Technical Support section of the Winamp forums. There should be a lot of good folks ready to help you in both of the above spots. Please make sure to run a search on your problem first before posting on the forums. Glint.Files: 30 megabyte upload limit with unlimited downloads, does not specify how long file will remain hosted. Users report of unsuccessful uploading, corrupt files, and transfer timeouts.
Libero Mail: 1 gigbyte upload limit with unlimited downloads, files hosted for 7 days. This service requires a free signup for a webmail service. Users report files with a popular amount of downloads are deleted without notice.

Macintosh & RAR Compression

After receiving numerous e-mails from Macintosh users frustrated with RAR file compression and Rapidshare downloads, I decided to ask the Macintosh users for some feedback. Unfortunately, I have no real experience on the Macintosh platform, so this was my best option for information and knowledge related to these questions. Please feel free to post comments to contribute to this section.

The following quotes should (hopefully) assist Macintosh users painlessly download and decompress rar compressed files:

Uploading doesn´t work at all, downloading doesn´t work with opera, but with the Internet Explorer it does. To un-rar i use Stuffit, only the drag and drop method works though. - libertine (on mac os 9.2.2)

I have no problems using Netscape (or better Safari). Internet Explorer is pretty much worthless. I am running 10.3.8 and just using the software that came with it (Stuffit expander). - selopan
I have no problems up and downloading with Rapidshare on my Mac 10.2.8 using the Safari 1.0 brower. There are some issues using 'other' download managers (iGetter etc) but using Control-Click Download-To-Disk works fine. I use Stuffit v8.02, and this has worked with most 'rar' files. As a Mac user, I have no problem with Rapidshare. I use the Safari browser on Mac OS X 10.3.8. I've had some problems with RAR files, but I find "RAR Expander" pretty reliable, but not perfect. It is certainly better than "Stuffit Expander." - Filbert

Rapidshare Upload Tips

Many people have submitted albums using the Rapidshare server, only to have their uploads deleted upon discovery by Rapidshare. The vast majority of uploads were deleted due to certain errors made by the uploader. These are a quick list of tips to follow if one wants to share full albums using the Rapidshare server.

Always compress the files into a rar or zip file. Do not directly upload mp3 files.
Choose a discreet filename for the rar or zip file. Do not use the exact name of the artist or album in the title. Furthermore, never use numbers to differentiate the files (example file01.rar, file02.rar). Also, stay away from using sequential letters (example filea.rar, fileb.rar)
An option for further security is setting a password on the rar or zip file. Most applications make this quite easy to do. Remember, however, if you do use a password on an archive, to be careful of case sensitivity and to list the password when submitting the archive!
Use a proxy when uploading, preferrably an anonymous server. This option is not at all mandatory but is a good safety precaution for the "ip logging" claimed on the site.

Many users have expressed interest on how to capture streaming audio and save the audio in mp3 format. Allow me to introduce an excellent, free tool to your arsenal, the MP3 Stream Recorder. The MP3 Stream Recorder allows the user to record mp3 streams through the web browser and directly links to mp3 server streams. Moreover, this tool comes with full proxy server support.

Download the MP3 Stream Recorder and follow installation instructions.
Locate the Server area and enter the server address in the box.
Select a specific file where you would like to save this stream.
Press the Record button. This will begin recording the live stream directly to the file. This program saves file information (name, url, bitrate, version, etc) in addition to the audio.
Users may painlessly specify the amount, however long or short, of the stream to record. Simply specify time amounts in the recording options.
Pull up the main system menu by right clicking on a empty part of the program. The pop up system menu allows access to more options, including the option to search for certain mp3 servers by category. Moreover, the user may set up proxy and login settings.

Recovering Data from Scratched CDs

The following information will explain and cover some special, painless techniques on how to create a full working CD from the scratched one. I have personally tested this and had fixed a CD that would not read data at all. This tip works best with small unreadable scratches, as some hard scratches are too deep and loose the data permanently.

Requirements:

Alcohol 120% software
Cooking oil
Small piece of cotton
Dry cleaner paper

Follow this simple steps to fix a scratched cd for repair purposes:

In step one you must do some preparation work on the CD. Begin by wetting the cotton with water. Begin to clean the CD in a vertical motion; three firm wipes shall be sufficient. Dry the CD with the dry cleaner paper.
Using another piece of cotton, apply oil to the CD surface. Be sure to do this with caution and not overuse oil. After a through cleaning, dry carefully. Particles from the oil will stay on the microsurface of the scratch. It appears that the oil helps the laser of the CD/DVD driver
to read the surface again.
After downloading and installing Alcohol 120% software, run the program and select to create an ISO - image making wizard. Attempt to read the CD drive and test if the program can read the Alcohol 120% software is recommended for this, as it is known to recover data more efficiently than other ISO software.
If a sucessful read is obtained, I recommended creating a new CD immediately. Copy all the data from the CD to the hard drive or create an ISO of the CD for immediate use. With a favorite burning utility, burn the ISO or data onto a new CD.

Shoutcast: Create a Personal Radio Station

Enjoy this quick guide to making your own Radio Station using your downloaded mp3s. Requirements include Winamp, a minimum connection of 256/64 kbps (will work with dialup connections, but will not be able to handle more than 2-6 listeners at a time), & an active, steady IP.

Download Shoutcast files from their official website at http://www.shoutcast.com.
Upon download of these file, install both Shoutcast files.
After a successful installation go to: Start > Program Files > Shoutcast DNAS > EDIT SHOUTCAST DNS CONFIG
Configure Shoutcast by scrolling down to the password: change option. Be sure to change your password before continuing configuration.
Find The Portbase and change it to the port of choice.
Find Maxusers and change it to the number of choice. This should be based on your bandwidth: 1,000 users might be an unrealistic choice for a DSL connection. On a cable connection 75 users runs smoothly.
After completing the last three steps select EDIT > SAVE.
Open Winamp and right click on OPTIONS. Proceed to OPTIONS > PREFRENCES > DSP EFFECT > NULLSOFT SHOUTCAST.
Next, under Winamp, find the OUTPUT selection; click on CONNECTION > THROUGH THE ADDRESS - enter the address of your domain; this is obtainable via http://www.no-ip.com if unknown.
Configure the port number to the port earlier entered into The Portbase.
Find the ENCODER and choose the music to play on the radio.
Return back to OUTPUT > OUTPUT CONFIG > YELLOW PAGES. The Yellow Pages displays advertisemant information for the radio.
Click CONNECT. If done properly, the radio station should be online.
The radio may be verified by simply going to the address earlier added in the preference.

A quick and painless step by step that explains how Rapidshare works and how to quickly download files from Rapidshare links.

Begin by simply click the link or by copying the link into your web browser.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page.
Press the FREE button to start the download.
Upon click the FREE button, a second, similar page will load.
Scroll down to the bottom of the second page.
Find the download counter; you must wait until the counter finishes before the download will begin.
After waiting for the counter to finish or by using the trick, a third page will appear.
Scroll down to the bottom of the third page.
The file name will appear with a code to begin the download. Copy the code exactly how it is provided and click the link to begin the download. This will prompt the user to save the file.

Burning (Completely!) Gapless Audio CDs

This tutorial works with Foobar 2000, a freeware application listed in the MP3 Freeware Recommendations article. Although there is an option in most burning sotware, there is still a noticeable pause between songs. This causes problems when creating live concert cds and certain electronic (trance, drums and bass, etc) albums.

First, download and install Foobar2000, including the Foobar 2000 burn plugin.
After downloading the plugin, unzip the file and locate "foo_burninate.dll".
Place this file in C:/Program Files/foobar2000/components or the alternative destination of Foobar 2000 installation.
Upon starting Foobar 2000, click the playlist (at the top); select and add the MP3s files for the CD.
Highlight all the MP3s and right click. Select Write audio CD.
The default Foobar2000 settings should write a completely gapless audio CD if properly installed and executed.

Audiograbber
Audiograbber is an excellent program that does as the title says, it literally grabs digital audio from the CD. The program copies the audio digitally, not using a soundcard. This allows the user to make perfect rips; the program includes a test spot to ensure the quality of the rip.

Moreover, Audiograbber automatically normalizes the music and deletes all traces of silence. The program can be set up to send the newly captured data to an external encoder. This program can be used to capture audio from vinyl and cassette tapes. Due to the amazing amount of features included on Audiograbber, I firmly recommend this software above all the rest.

CDex
CDex is a great alternative to Audiograbber. CDex converts CD digital audio and wav files to directly to MP3 upon the request of the user and supports the use of CDDB. This program has an easy user interface and can be used by a novice. Very user friendly interface.

dBpowerAMP Music Converter
Convert from one format to another painlessly. dBpowerAMP supports just about every audio type available: mp3, mp4, Windows Media Audio (wma), Ogg Vorbis, AAC, Monkeys Audio, FLAC and has an easy to use interface. Moreover, it converts while preserving ID Tags and normalizing volume on audio files. dBpowerAMP has Windows Explorer Integration - simply right click Convert To & popup useful information on audio files (such as bitrate, length).

Winamp
Almost everyone should know what this little program is and what it does. Plays music and video files, includes a full featured media library, supports modern and classic skins, and much, much more.. This is one of the oldest players available and definitely still one of the best available.

Foo Bar 2000
This is one of the better alternatives to Winamp. A simple music player which supports every codec known to man. Although it doesn't provide much eyecandy, this player is bombproof and has many user enable options. Don't let the simple GUI fool you.

Playlist Maker (MP3 Book Helper)
For those tired of using winamp to make playlists and desire a real GUI that does an amazingly efficient job of list making. Another key feature is simple retaging via CDDB. Playlist Maker (MP3 Book Helper) was originally developed for audio books, but works amazingly well with music.

MAC
MAC means MPEG Audio Collection. It will help you to organize your audio file collection. There are some nice features, specifically a Tag editor, file renamer utility. Moreover, MAC supports the almost every type of media known.

Audacity
More open source freeware, this editor is handy for tweaking files recorded on the line in socket. You can use it to split tracks, clean up the sound, adjust the gain, and much more. It will import WAV or MP3 and export to either format or to OGG. (Mp3 is not included, but you just have to install the LAME DLL.)

RetroPlayer (Macintosh Platform Only)
RetroPlayer is a music player with which you can listen to music as if it was played by an analog record player. You can re-enjoy a piece of music that you have listened to for many times.

Simultaneous Downloads with Rapidshare

Here is a quick tutorial on how to download files from Rapidshare simultaneously using Firefox. It is a simple operation; one must use a different proxy per download. Although it seems impossible to do on Internet Explorer, it is extremely simple with Firefox. Although this tip works, the downloads do slow down significantly when one downloads more than two files. Here are the quick steps:

Using the FireFox browser, download and install the SwitchProxy plug-in for FireFox.
Proceed to finding a free proxy server, I recommend the Steganos Proxies list.
Proceed to Rapidshare's download link and start the download. Do not use a download manager (No FlashGet), simply use FireFox's download manager by itself. (This is because Flashget uses your real IP, not the one loaded by the SwitchProxy plug-in)
Load the SwitchProxy plug-in and use one of the proxies. This does not interfere with your current download.
Proceed to a second Rapidshare download link. In most cases, it should begin a second download. However, if it reads an error (already downloading), then the selected proxy is still submitting your real IP to RapidShare. This may not be your fault, as some free proxies use your real IP.
If you get this error, simply try the next available proxy in the list.
To begin another download, repeats the steps using a new proxy in the list. This can be done an unlimited amount of times (or until you run out of working proxies).

A quick tutorial on how to use Napster's 14 day trial to obtain hundreds of free, legal mp3 files. All credit for this goes to warlock1711 of club.cdfreaks.com for discovering the loophole that made this proof-of-concept possible. Here are the simple steps:

Download and install Napster, sign up for 14 day free trial.
Download and install the 5.02 version of Winamp.
Download and install the Winamp Plug-in Output Stacker.
Open Winamp Options->Plug-ins->Output->Dietmar's Output Stacker->Configure
Add out_ds.dll from Winamp/Plug-ins folder
Add out_disk.dll from Winamp/Plug-ins folder
Select out_disk.dll in the Output Stacker->Configure
Set the output directory and output file mode to Force WAV file.
Exit preferences.
Load downloaded Napster protected WMAs into Winamp.
Press play and each file will be converted to WAV.
Burn WAVs to CD.

Theoretical fun: Three computers, one fast networked drive, and a few dedicated people: Turning Napster's 14 day free trial into 252 full 80 minute CDs of free music.

Each song can only be burned after the duration of the track length has elapsed in realtime: 14 day trial = 336 hours = 20,160 minutes of potential music = 252 80 minute CDs.

Computer 1: Dedicated to downloading new music off of Napster
Computer 2: Dedicated to building WAV files for each CD
Computer 3: Dedicated to burning CDs

All computers share one fast networked drive where new files are downloaded to, converted WAVs are saved to, and CDs are burned from.

Moreover, if you use the Out-lame Winamp plugin in the Output Stacker in place of Out-disk, you can convert straight to MP3. It still encodes no faster than realtime, but this is a great way to conserve space. WAV(Out-disk) is still recommended if you are burning CDs and want to keep as much quality as possible. I can confirm that this all works.

Thus, you can run multiple instances of Winamp at once, each converting its own song. Each instance's playback will not interfere with any of the others, illustrating the fact that this is not simply recording the music off of your soundcard. Doing this, you can get FAR MORE than 252 full 80 minute CDs within 14 days. I can confirm that this works.

You can transcode(MP3) or decode(WAV) X albums in the time it takes for the longest track on the album to elapse. And since you're not limited to only tracks from one album at a time, you can trans/decode as many tracks as instances of Winamp your computer will run limited only by your computer's resources.

Quote from Napster's official statement:
"It would take 10 hours to convert 10 hours of music in this manner."

With the updated methods, you can convert 100 hours or 1,000 hours or 10,000 hours of music in 10 hours. The only limit is your computing resources.

ACE, RAR, TAR, and ZIP Files

ACE, RAR, TAR, and ZIP files are all date containing files. They store one or several files in the compressed form. After you downloaded the compressed file, you need to unpack its contents in order to use it. Download one of the following programs to decompress the file:

These programs provide the complete support for compressed files, so you may both create and unpack them. If you installed a program on your computer and downloaded a compressed file, in most cases may double click on file icon to open it in the program.

Some compressed files can be parts of multi-volume sequences. In WinRAR you can split a huge archive to a few smaller files, which are called volumes. They may have extensions .rar (the first volume), .r00, .r01, ..., or .part1.rar (the first volume), .part2.rar, ..., etc. If you need to unpack volumes, place all them to the same folder and start extraction from the first volume.

Disabling the Yousendit Download Limit

This tip will disable the Yousendit 25 downloads limit. However, the file will still die after seven days, as this tip only allowed unlimited downloads.

When a file is uploaded to yousendit.com, a url is given upon completion of the upload. This url is where the file is stored and is given to share the file. The url originally looks like this:

Please keep in mind that when using Yousendit, always rename your file to something insignificant, as opposed to the actual filename itself. A simple example is to rename TheBeatles.rar to fe565tert4.rar. I personally recommend putting a password on the compressed file in addition to renaming the file.

This simply keeps the snooping eyes at Yousendit from seeing what is actually being transferred. Although I am unaware of anyone being fined or prosecuted from Yousendit, I have heard of people being banned from the server for sending copywritten files none the more educated as to what is being transferred. Moreover, Yousendit reserves the right to remove any file, even on the thoughts of suspicion. It is troublesome to spend time uploading a file, only to have it immediately deleted from the server.

Unlimited Rapidshare Downloads

Using the Rapidshare server, one may download only a specified amount of files per hour. However, because downloads are tracked by an IP address, one may change their IP address, thus downloading as often as one would like. In most cases, an IP address is assigned directly by one's ISP. Here are the steps necessary in changing the IP address:

Clean up your cookies; remove them based on instructions from the browser being used. This is done in the case that one or more cookies may belong to Rapidshare.
On Command Prompt type the following:
- ipconfig /flushdns (Press Enter)
- ipconfig /release (Press Enter)
- ipconfig /renew (Press Enter)
- exit (Press Enter)
As a second option, one may save these commands in a .bat file. Then, run it everytime one need to use the Rapidshare server.
Remember to clean up all Rapidshare cookies in your temp Internet Files folder upon redoing the commands or rerunning the .bat file

This should solve the problem; the browser should be ready to download as many files as you want from their server.

Finding MP3s on Internet Relay Chat

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, one of the most popular and most interactive services on the internet. If you haven't used it before it's name can be a bit deceiving; although there are thousands of chat channels, there are also several channels specifically created for file sharing. Moreover, there are specific channels used for finding full albums or specific tracks.

After downloading and installing the IRC chat client, you must connect to a chat server. I recommend using Efnet, one of the "big three" (also including DALnet & Undernet). Fill in the necessary information to connect to the server. Although, your real full name is not necessary, it is necessary that you fill in something; the same applies to your email address. For more information regarding getting started on IRC, please view the links at the end of this tutorial.

One connected to a server, you must find a specific channel for mp3 file sharing. To search for a channel, click on the fourth icon from the left on your tool bar. (See the screenshot below) In the match text: window, type mp3. Then, click Get List! and the program should generate a list of channels. Pick a channel from this list and double click it in the list to join the specific channel.

The example that I will provide you with works with certain mp3 channels on IRC. Specifically, I can recommend to connect on the Efnet server and to join #mp3addicts by typing /j #mp3addicts in the status window. This specific channel hosts literally thousands of mp3s on hundreds of different servers.

The channel has specific robots set up to give you information on how to search the channel for mp3s, rules of the channel and additional information. An example of searching for mp3 is as follows: we are searching for mp3s by "The Beatles". The majority of the file servers in the channel should respond to the command @find Beatles or @search Beatles. Several windows should pop up; these are replies from the file servers in private message windows. Simply cut and paste the given command from the server into the main channel window to recieve the file. Please note that the majority of file servers are on que status, so you may have a small wait period to download the actual file.

When the file is sent, you will recieve a DCC accept screen. If the file matches the name of the file you selected for download, you may accept the DCC transfer. You will see the status of the transfer and will find the file either in your Sounds or Download directory, depending on your settings.
